3/4 Sickness

I have a condition.  A malady.  It could be a disease, although I don’t want to visit a professional to find out.  I call it “3/4 Sickness”.  What is this scary sounding affliction, you ask?  It has to do with crafting.

Let me explain.

See, I like to do crafts and such.  I like to sew.  I knit.  I scrapbook.  And when I first start a project, I am super gung ho.  I am in a hurry to get started.  I begin to ignore the demands of the household, of the children, of anything really, just so I can work on my all important project.  Let’s take a quilt, for example.

I cut, I piece, I begin to sew.  My project takes shape.  I get the top completely done, I cut the batting to size, place it with the backing.  And then I put it up for two months because I am sick unto death of looking at it and feel like if I have to touch it one more time I will have to start drinking alcohol.

(Editor’s note:  I realize that many of you aren’t quilters and so that previous paragraph reads like this “words words words sew words words words alcohol”.  That’s OK.)

Are any of you this way?  Do you, too, experience 3/4 sickness?  Do you get 3/4 of the way through a project and begin to hate life?  And the most important question:  is there any medication I can take?   Diet Coke and Reese’s Cups don’t seem to be working.

I have several patchworks that still need quilting, after a few years. I love the sewing bit. Not so much the quilting part.

Me too. I’m pretty much quasi-cussing the whole quilting part. It often feels like the chore that will not ever end.

Oh girl, I am so with you…. 3/4 of a quilt here, 1/4 of a scarf there, here fabric, there yarn, every where it’s not done, so is the life of me e-i-e-i-oooohhhh! For some reason it’s either the project or the “duties” of the house, I can’t do both, what wrong with me? us? If you find the meds, tell me! 🙂

I’ve got startitis. I’ll get bored with a project…. and get all starry eyed over something new and want to start working on it before my last project is done. At one point I had 20 active (knitting) projects.

So no – I have no idea what you are talking about 🙂

I have this, too. Although, I don’t put it away for 2 months. I finish it right then and whatever I have done last looks like complete and total rubbish. So, you’re a better “man” than I am. I am so sick to death of looking at my projects , that I cannot even bear the thought of bringing it out in a couple of months. So, I guess this is your other option. Halfway done, or crap-way done…you choose.

I have been working on a fleece blanket for our bed for almost a year now. Only 2 sides left to go. But the dang thing weighs a ton. And the scissors make my fingers hurt after a while. I can do the baby sized ones with no problem. But one the size of our bed was way too much for me to complete at one setting. I think Charlie is getting used to using a 3/4 finished blanket on the bed.

  7. Are you kidding? There’s a reason that my blog has one entry on it…and that is just a placeholder. I fear starting it and then forgetting it exists.

I believe you may have hit on something here babydoll. I started this sweater for a man (you met him) before I got married – still haven’t finished it. I’ve been married for 13 years now, the sweater is like 95% or more finished. I also started a sweater for Aunt Vamori, got bored with it I guess cause I’m still working on it, although I love the cow pattern…

I embarrassed to say I actually know what the condition is now !!!

UFO’s! (unfinished objects) I think that we crafters have those lying about. I have a sweater that only has about 5 inches left to knit on the cuff, and it has sat there in the bag for over two years. I take it out on occasion, look at it, and then put it back. I think that it counts, (my just having handled it, that is), as progress towards actually finishing it someday.

We will NOT count how many quilts I have that are in the ufo stage! I will admit to more than one, less than 10. Potential ufo’s don’t count!

  10. I have the sickness, but not because I get tired of a project. My problem is that I am afraid to mess it up, so I don’t touch it for a while. When I feel brave enough, I will pick it up again.
